Covent Garden

1210 Saint-Josse-ten-Noode / Belgique

The interior garden, covered by a 1300-square-metre glass roof, will be the natural extension of the park at the heart of Covent Garden. The oval-shaped main 26 storeys high volume is pierced by a huge atrium extending to the 14th floor. The atrium is partly external, to allow natural ventilation. The upper levels are organized around a patio opening on to the city and a volume in recess. The interplay of the full and empty areas and the overlap reinforce the building's personality and give it a human scale. The façade, comprised of non-reflective glass, features horizontal stainless steel spandrelpanels at every second floor. At night, the illuminated roof will reinforce Covent Garden's role as a new downtown landmark. The white architectural concrete mass of the low-rise building (8+9 storeys) contrasts strongly with the tower. The building's volume will be aligned with the hotels located on the other side of the street. The overlapping of two low volumes forms Covent Garden's main entrance. The glass-roofed interior landscaped garden connects the two buildings, allowing access to the lobby areas and to a possible restaurant at ground-floor level. The garden is proposed as a Mediterranean-type garden, embellished with leisure areas and ponds that will form part of the wastewater treatment system designed specifically for the project.
